The Technology Behind Smart Amto
From passive RFID tags to connected GPS devices, edge computing and enterprise integration — Smart Amto brings together the full technology stack for modern supply-chain identification and security.
RAIN / UHF RFID
RAIN UHF RFID (ISO 18000-63 / EPC Gen2 v2) enables wireless, non-line-of-sight identification of tagged assets at distances from under one metre to over ten metres — depending on antenna configuration and tag placement. A single reader can identify hundreds of tags per second, making it the foundation for automated gate processing, dock-door receiving, yard audits and warehouse cycle counts without stopping vehicles or manually handling items.
- No line-of-sight required — reads through cardboard, plastic and non-metallic materials
- Simultaneous multi-tag identification at rates exceeding 1,000 reads per second
- Read ranges from 0.5 m (near-field) to 12+ m (long-range portal) depending on hardware
- ISO 18000-63 / EPC Gen2 v2 — globally interoperable standard
- RAIN RFID Alliance certified ecosystem for broad hardware compatibility
- Passive tags require no battery — indefinite operational life

RFID + Physical Security
Smart Amto security seals combine a tamper-evident physical barrier with an embedded UHF RFID transponder. When applied to a container, trailer or railcar door, the seal creates both a visible deterrent against unauthorized access and a unique electronic identity that is automatically verified at every RFID read point throughout the supply chain. Any attempt to remove or tamper with the seal produces irreversible visual evidence — and the RFID event log records the last verified read location and timestamp, enabling rapid incident investigation.
- Irreversible tamper-evident indication — manipulation is immediately visible on inspection
- Unique EPC identifier verified automatically at every RFID read point
- ISO 17712:2013 high-security certification for international customs acceptance
- C-TPAT compliant — accepted by CBP and border agencies worldwide
- Chain-of-custody documentation generated without manual data entry
- Custom laser-etched barcodes and serial numbers for dual-mode verification

RFID + GPS
RFID delivers precise, automatic identification at fixed infrastructure points — gates, dock doors, portals and customs checkpoints. GPS-connected devices extend visibility to the spaces between those fixed points, providing location data while assets are in transit across roads, rail corridors and intermodal routes. Smart Amto offers both technologies independently and in combined form, allowing customers to design the right coverage model for their specific application — from a single-facility gate system to a multi-country cargo tracking deployment.
- RFID for instant, automatic identification at gates, portals and dock doors
- GPS for continuous location visibility between fixed RFID read points
- Combined RFID + GPS devices available for single-unit seal-and-track deployments
- Cellular (4G LTE / LTE-M / NB-IoT) connectivity for real-time cloud reporting
- Configurable reporting intervals, geofence alerts and motion-triggered events
- Long battery life — optimized firmware for multi-month transit deployments

Edge Computing
Smart Amto edge software runs on a local controller installed at the gate, dock door or facility — processing RFID events close to the source before transmitting filtered, validated data to customer applications. Edge processing eliminates the latency and network dependency of cloud-only architectures, enabling sub-second gate control responses and continuous operation during network interruptions. Events are buffered locally and synchronized when connectivity is restored, ensuring no reads are lost.
- Local RFID event processing at the gate or facility — no cloud round-trip required
- Offline event buffering — reads stored locally during network interruptions and synced on reconnect
- Sub-second gate control response for barrier, camera and alarm integration
- Configurable filtering rules — suppress duplicate reads, define dwell-time thresholds
- Secure TLS-encrypted connectivity to cloud and enterprise systems
- Remote management, firmware updates and diagnostics via cloud portal
